Improvements
A major undertaking in the former HWD system was the replacement of 2,326 feet of 4-inch pipe with 12-inch pipe on Lakeview Avenue to improve both the water quality and fire protection to the general area.
Agreement was reached with New York City on November 10, 2005 relating to the issue of excess per capita consumption billings, resulting in approval from the City to proceed with the upgrading of the Rye Lake Station from 14.2 mgd to 20.0 mgd in pumping capacity. Contracts for that work had previously been awarded and construction will take place in 2006.
On October 25, 2005 contracts were awarded for the improvements at the Larchmont Plant. This project includes the relocation of caustic soda treatment to that facility from Shaft 22 for better dosage control, building and equipment upgrades and security improvements. Work on this project is expected to begin in early 2006.
In 2006 construction is expected to begin on the 20.0 mgd Rye Lake Filter Plant. This facility is expected to be in service by early 2009.
Further improvements are scheduled in 2006 for the former HWD portion of the system. Most important is the construction of about 1,850 feet of 16-inch transmission main on Lake Street that will enable the Water Works to provide the former HWD system with water from its Rye Lake Station and, eventually, filtered water from the Rye Lake Filter Plant. Other projects include the installation of 2,000 feet of 8-inch main on White Plains Avenue to replace a like amount of 4-inch pipe and 2,500 feet of 12-inch pipe on Taylor, Gainsborg and Columbus Avenues to improve fire protection to those areas.
