Annual Drinking Water Quality Report For 2007

Capital Improvements
A June 21, 2004 report on the Harrison Water District No. 1 by Dolph Rotfeld Engineering, P.C. recommended a significant number of distribution system improvements, particularly the replacement of 4-inch pipe.  Based on recommendations set forth in that report, the Water Works continued the first phase of a program to replace 4-inch cast iron mains.

On Taylor Avenue from the Preston School easement to White Plains Avenue, 507 feet of new 12, 8 & 6-inch ductile iron pipe replaced a like amount of 6 & 4-inch pipe, greatly improving fire flows and reliability of service to the area. This project results in better fire protection coverage.

A new 12-inch water main program to replace 4, 6 and 8-inch cast iron mains continued from the 2005 Lakeview Avenue project.  This project began on Harrison Street at Lakeview Avenue, through the Preston School easement to Taylor Avenue, to Gainsborg Avenue and Columbus Avenue. The project continued on Columbus Avenue and Locust Avenue. A total of 2,688 feet of 12-inch and 78 feet of 6-inch main were installed. Additionally, 1 new hydrant was added to the system under this project giving better fire protection coverage.

A total of 1,915 feet of 16” water main was installed from the intersection of Purchase Street and Lake Street to 830 Lake Street, connecting to the existing 12” HWD water main.  This interconnection to former Harrison Water District No. 1 went on-line July 17, 2007, as the former Harrison Water District #1 was in need of certain improvements to comply with regulatory requirements concerning water quality and fire protection.

The WJWW was authorized in June 2005 to install approximately 1550 linear feet of 12-inch diameter DIP water main in Old Lake Street in the Town of Harrison, to serve existing homes on private wells. Construction started in November 2007, and should be complete in the spring of 2008.  As development occurs in the future along Old Lake Street, this main can be extended to connect to the new 16-inch main on Lake Street.  This future connection will provide system redundancy and better fire protection.

To improve the ability to provide water to West Harrison during a main break, a booster pump station is planned to be installed over the 10-inch main at Westchester Avenue, near the juncture of Anderson Hill Road.  This pump station will supply the former Harrison Water District No. 1 (HWD #1) Woodside Tank service zone, from the Westchester Joint Water Works High Service Zone.  This project will also include a chlorination process, in order to provide better disinfection to the distribution system.

Special Notice to Former Customers of Harrison Water District  No. 1

On Saturday, May 12, 2007 at approximately 5:30 a.m. the WJWW had a failure of the chlorination system at the Lake Street Pump Station.  Chlorination was restored at 8:30 a.m.  The WJWW conducted a comprehensive water main flushing program to remove the unchlorinated water from the system.  This was completed by 6:30 p.m. on May 12th.  Bacteriological samples were taken throughout the area on Sunday, May 13th and Monday, May 14th, to confirm the effectiveness of the flushing program.  The Boil Water Order was rescinded on Tuesday, May 15th.  Ingestion of unchlorinated water may cause gastrointestinal infections.  Symptoms of infections include nausea, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
