About WJWW’s Planned Ultraviolet (UV) Treatment Facility at Rye Lake...

Westchester Joint Water Works is undertaking construction of an Ultraviolet (UV) Treatment Facility at Rye Lake to address an immediate public health risk by treating for the organism cryptosporidium, which has been detected at the lake. UV treatment is a cost-effective and proven technology to control cryptosporidium, often referred to as “crypto.” If left untreated, crypto can cause gastrointestinal illnesses and other health risks, especially in vulnerable individuals.

The UV Treatment Facility will be approximately 2,900 square feet in size and is being constructed off Lake Street in Harrison, on propertyowned by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. This property already is used by WJWW to house pumping and water treatment facilities. The UV facility building will be pre-fabricated off-site and designed with an exterior finish similar to the existing fieldstone-clad building on the property. The facility will be surrounded by fencing and will feature enhanced landscaping.

WJWW expects to break ground with site work in earlyJuly 2021, with delivery of the pre-fabricated building in October 2021. The UV facility is estimated to cost $8 million to build and is scheduled to be in service by November 2021.

WJWW has been awarded a grant of $3.2 million to help fund this project through the New York State Intermunicipal Water Infrastructure Grants Program.
